case study
For this Single Axis Trunnion Positioner, the trunnion’s headstock is powered by Motion Index Drives’ VTMF1000 Freely programmable indexer. To meet the customer’s needs, two types of drives were integrated into the VTMF1000 headstock. One set of trunnions is driven by an Aux Axis servo motor and controlled by the robot controller, while the other set utilizes a Gearmotor with brake and encoder.
The VTMF1000 achieves remarkably low positional accuracies, in the single-digit arc seconds range, thanks to its high preload system and the utilization of servo reducers with extremely low backlash.
Safety is paramount in the design, with a built-in “Lock-out” mechanism to ensure operator and maintenance personnel safety. When someone enters the cell and crosses the safety gates, the lock-out device’s cylinders are actuated, extending the safety pin to engage with the lock-out plate. The plate features a pattern of slots to ensure at least one pin remains engaged throughout the potential 360 degrees of rotation.
The headstock’s front features a cable management system, allowing the customer to route utilities through the cable carrier to the fixture. Grounding is facilitated through the center through-hole of the indexer.
Additionally, the design incorporates a home prox switch and overtravel switch protection for added safety. The overtravel switch prevents the cable management system from wrapping too tightly around the spool or unwrapping beyond fully extended.
The tailstock is equipped with a large Pillow Block bearing assembly, offering adjustability to align the tooling and frame with the headstock. Both the headstock and tailstock are supported by heavy-duty tubular structure frame weldments, all painted according to customer specifications.
